‘Houdini’ black & ivory cotton houndstooth fabric

We absolutely love houndstooth check fabrics. They nod towards classic formal dressing from the mid-twentieth century but they also have the ability to bring contemporary edge to an outfit. This black and ivory cotton houndstooth fabric is that rare beast – a versatile, lighter-weight fabric but with a little structure and in a natural fibre. We think it’s the perfect way of bringing some offbeat formality to a summer wardrobe, yet easy to wear as well as to work with.

What kind of fabric is this?

Our black and ivory cotton houndstooth fabric is a lighter-weight suiting fabric which could also be described as a crisp light-to-medium weight dress fabric. It’s 100% cotton in a houndstooth twill weave.

What does this fabric feel like?

This fabric feels cool, crisp and very slightly textured to the touch. It will be perfectly comfortable next to the body.

How does this fabric move?

This black and ivory cotton houndstooth fabric is a lively fabric which holds a little shape. It falls into angled folds and will catch a breeze for a restrained ripple. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?

As a more formal dress, skirt or jacket, you may want to line this fabric in order to provide additional structure as well as to enable it to move across the body and over clothing layers. That said, this is a double-sided fabric with no discernible difference between the two sides, meaning that an unlined coat or jacket would be perfectly possible.

What can I make with this fabric?

We think this classic monochrome houndstooth will be perfect for trousers in the summer months. Semi fitted, tailored styles will work well – either cropped close to the ankle or in a wider-legged style. Style Arc have a range of well-used trouser patterns and the one we have our eye on is their ‘Audrey’ Pant. We think this is a fabric that will hold the slightly tailored shape of these trousers particularly well.
