We love the colour combination in this purple, red, grey and pink checked stretch twill fabric. It strikes the perfect balance between exuberance and classic – the vibrant checked lines over a sober grey, grounded by a deep purple-brown. This is a lovely medium-weight suiting fabric that lends itself to far more wardrobe combinations than you might anticipate; we’re excited at the notion of a pair of trousers topped off by a warm, bright winter jacket.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our grey and pink checked stretch twill fabric fabric is a blend of polyester and viscose with a little stretch; just enough for some fitting ease. The polyester content provides durability; the viscose is responsible for the soft handle. The diagonal twill weave is visible as part of the check pattern.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a particularly soft handle; it’s pliable and easy to work but has a little structure too. It will be perfectly comfortable next to the body.
How does this fabric move?
This pink checked stretch twill fabric has substance, sufficient to hold a little shape from pleats and tucks, but it’s not in any way stiff. It has a dignified movement, falling into slightly-rounded folds and although the twill weave gives it some additional diagonal ease, it’s stable on the cutting table. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
As a more formal dress, skirt or jacket, you may want to line this fabric in order to provide additional structure as well as to enable it to move across the body and over clothing layers. That said, this is a double-sided fabric with no discernible difference between the two sides, meaning that an unlined coat or jacket would be perfectly possible.
What can I make with this fabric?
Skirts, dresses, jackets and trousers are all options for this pink checked stretch twill fabric. As an A-line skirt it will hold some shape and move easily. A coat or coat-dress would also be an option; it doesn’t have the warmth for a winter coat but it certainly has sufficient structure for tailored elements and top-stitching. For a semi-tailored look you could try the ‘Marte’ Coat from Melilot Patterns. The internal seams will need finishing neatly as it’s unlined, but we think you’d find plenty of wardrobe combinations it would work with.
