This silky navy blue lyocell piqué fabric is a bit of a revelation, such is its luxurious feel. Lyocell is the generic name for the sustainable manufacturing process that is also branded as Tencel by the Lenzing company. As with a Tencel fabric, lyocell cloth has an unparalleled softness coupled with a graceful fall and a muted lustre. This particular lyocell has been finished to achieve a particularly silky feel. This is an extremely versatile fabric which lends itself to a wide range of garments, especially dresses and tops. The shade of blue here is a a slightly glowing navy blue – muted and leaning toward the lighter end of the ‘navy’ spectrum. It will elevate denim, work wonders with contrasting fabrics for colour blocking and easily carry an dress on its own. We’ve photographed it with our ‘Gala’ sorbet pink wool to demonstrate its capacity for joyful contrast.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our silky navy blue lyocell piqué fabric is a light-to-medium weight dress fabric (200 gsm) with a close waffle-like piqué weave with very good opacity for its weight. Lyocell fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and there are minimum waste products. They’re breathable and resist fading.
There’s no ease in this fabric so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is an extremely smooth, bouncing fabric; cool to the touch and supremely comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This navy blue lyocell piqué fabric is a flowing, lively cloth which falls and swings beautifully. You can see how it moves in this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however non-contrasting undergarments are recommended. A dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body and a silhouette will be visible with the light behind you. Sadly we don’t think this fabric quite passes our patented ‘knicker test’ for trousers, although half-lined palazzo pants would be an absolute dream.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our navy blue lyocell piqué fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to a wide range of tops, blouses, tunics and dresses. Loosely-fitted trousers and palazzo pants will also be an option with a half-lining. The ‘Cuff Top’ from The Assembly Line has fast become a favourite classic; this fabric would be perfect for an upmarket version of that design. Here’s Alice in her version created from our ‘Ceanothus’ cobalt Tencel twill.
Lyocell fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and waste is kept to a minimum. That all helps this fabric score highly for sustainability.
