Also known as ‘the sporty one’ around the ClothSpot workroom, this black and white striped viscose jersey fabric has a sharp and snappy look about it. We’ve called it ‘black and white’ but in fact the white colour here is just a notch or two below the white of a plain piece of paper. It tends very slightly towards the ivory which we think lends it an air of class and solidity.
Our black and white striped viscose jersey fabric is a single-knit fabric produced using a fine yarn yet with good opacity for its weight. It’s at the lighter-weight end of the medium-weight single-knit bracket, but has good opacity and is a surprisingly resilient fabric. This is a fabric with a beautiful movement and lovely drape as you can see from this video.
The fine knit structure of this fabric means that it ruches and gathers without adding bulk. As a result you have the option of using a pattern design that relies on ‘negative ease’ – that is, stretching the fabric to fit the body when worn. The stretch in this black and white striped viscose jersey fabric is approximately 40% with good return.
It’s an option for a long-line tunic or a semi-fitted t-shirt dress in which to stride through warmer days. You could also build the neck up as a roll-necked jumper to work underneath a shirt or dress on cooler outings. For our money however we’re keen to play up that sportier side with a polo shirt like this ‘Jess’ Polo from Style Arc.
Wash at 30 or 40 degrees – see our Fabric care pages for more information.
