We’re great advocates of the potential for lighter-weight wool fabrics at all times of the year. If you’ve ever worn a pair of flowing lightweight wool trousers then you’ll know just how cool and comfortable they can be. This charcoal wool suiting fabric has arrived from Italy via a high-end UK-based designer and is a beautiful-quality fabric.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our charcoal wool suiting fabric is a blend of wool with a little mohair. However banish from your mind the notion of ‘hairy’ mohair – that’s not what we have here. This is a cloth woven from two colours of yarn. The width-wise weft thread is a soft taupe while the warp is black. The combination of the two means that this fabric appears as a charcoal but catches the light beautifully. It looks beautiful with whites and ivories, pale neutrals, vibrant jewel colours and of course other greys. We’d describe it as a lighter-weight suiting fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a beautifully-smooth, slightly crisp handle. It will be very cool and comfortable next to the skin as trousers.
How does this fabric move?
Our charcoal wool suiting fabric has a delightfully-lively and rippling movement as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The construction of this lovely wool is a fine, flat weave. As a result this charcoal wool suiting fabric has good opacity for its weight, sufficient for wider-legged or semi-fitted trousers to remain unlined. However if you’re contemplating more structured trousers, a skirt or a jacket, then we’d suggest a lining (or a half-lining in the case of trousers) will help with structure, fit and movement.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think it would be just fabulous as cross-season trousers – either wide, flowing ones or more tailored and cropped designs. It would also make a classic pencil skirt or even a tailored dress. Relaxed blazers are very much on trend at the moment and we’ve been getting super feedback from customers using Kwik Sew pattern 3715. We think our charcoal wool suiting fabric would be perfect for a lightweight, summer version of this design.
