‘Fosse’ soft tawny cotton twill fabric

We’ve unearthed a fabulous range of cotton twills in colours perfect for your autumn wardrobe. This soft tawny cotton twill fabric is a warmer, softer tone than a rust, too pink for brown, not orange enough for a terracotta. It complements ochres, golds, olives and clean, fresh neutrals too. Think simple jeans, shape-holding cropped trousers and casual jackets.

What kind of fabric is this?

Our soft tawny cotton twill fabric has a classic diagonal twill weave. We’d describe it as a medium-weight twill, with excellent opacity for its weight. This is a 100% cotton fabric – there’s a very little mechanical ease across its width and on the bias but the give is minimal.

What does this fabric feel like?

Although a robust fabric, our soft tawny cotton twill fabric has a soft handle. On the ‘right’ side, the surface has been very slightly brushed – not so much as to change the nature of the fabric but sufficient to give it a soft handle. The reverse is very smooth and will be comfortable next to the skin.

How does this fabric move?

This is a very pliable fabric which isn’t in the least bulky. However despite its softness and pliability, it’s not a draping fabric. It holds a shape and falls into angled folds as you can see from this video.

Will I need to line this fabric?

A pair of trousers or casual jacket in this fabric won’t need lining. However a dress, skirt or more formal jacket could be lined in order to add shape and structure; also to enable ease of movement when being worn or when you’re taking it on and off.

What can I make with this fabric?

Our warm-toned tawny cotton twill fabric is perfect for casual skirts and jean-style jackets as well as jean-style and fitted trousers. We’ve got our eye on the ‘Ottoline’ jacket from Merchant & Mills which will use the structure of this fabric to good effect. The design also reflects the utilitarian nature of this twill.
