Floral cotton lawns are something of a summer staple and we’re gradually building up our stocks for the warmer days ahead. We do like to keep our eyes peeled for more grown-up prints and this dark, deep navy blue leaf-printed cotton lawn fabric seemed to fit the bill. Ginkgo leaves seem to be the motif of the season (along with llamas, apparently – although you’ll not find those here we assure you) and we like the implied movement and the relative sobriety compared to floral designs.
In case you’re in any doubt, we can assure you that this navy blue leaf-printed cotton lawn fabric is indeed a navy blue and not a black. We keep having to check – and we think it may win the award for the darkest navy blue fabric we’ve ever seen – however we can confirm that having placed it by a black fabric – this is definitely a blue.
With a refined, fine weave and a gently-crisp handle, we think our navy blue leaf-printed cotton lawn fabric is the perfect fabric in which to stay cool on a hot summer’s day. It’s a lighter-weight Pima cotton lawn fabric, perfect for summer layering. The close weave and the print pattern remove any need to line a top or tunic. You might want to consider a lining if you’re planning some bodice structure in a dress, or a slip if you’re wearing a dress for a more formal occasion.
The movement of this navy blue leaf-printed cotton lawn fabric is a soft, floating drape which will catch a breeze with elegance, as you can see from this video.
We think this fabric is perfect for summer tops and blouses as well as gently-falling maxi dresses. We’d be inclined to make the most of its lighter weight with ruches and softly-rolling gathers, bringing body and movement to a garment without bulkiness. However we think a restrained pattern such as this would also be rather lovely as a cool summer shirt – in which case a pattern such as the Grainline Archer would be the perfect choice.
You can find out more about this design in our blog posts – it’s a very straightforward pattern that we’d recommend either for shirt beginners or anyone looking for a classic less-fitted shirt.
