Occasionally we find doubleweave fabrics where the two surfaces of a fabric are woven together as part of the manufacturing process as opposed to being stitched or bonded together. They invariably have a beautifully-rounded drape and a sense of substance that is difficult to describe. This classic grey and camel reversible wool coating fabric is possibly the ultimate example. You’re looking here at a timeless classic which has come to us from an Italian mill via a high-end UK-based designer.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our grey and camel reversible wool coating fabric is primarily a high-end wool cloth, with a small nylon content. The two layers of wool that have been interwoven resemble a mouflon with a non-directional and compact nap, almost (but not quite) obscuring the regular weave pattern. This is a fully-reversible fabric and the finishing process means that you wouldn’t need to hem the edges of your garment. We suggest that a single or double row of straight stitching might be a good idea to stabilise any raw edges and of course you could bind them although we don’t think that’s necessary.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a supremely soft handle. You won’t be able to resist wrapping yourself in this fabric; both sides are equally soft and seductive.
How does this fabric move?
Although this is a coating fabric with with substance, it moves with elegance, falling into softly-structured folds. It’s pliable and stable to work with. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A real strength of this exceptional fabric however is its double-sided appearance. A simple wrap or duster coat wouldn’t require lining; in fact we think you’d be missing the point of this reversible fabric were you to do so.
What can I make with this fabric?
It’s possible to find coat, wrap and jacket patterns designed for double-sided fabrics. We’ve found pattern B6244 from Butterick which we think would be perfect for this grey and camel reversible wool coating fabric.
81% wool, 19% nylon
Steam gently before cutting, holding a steam iron 1 inch away from the wrong side of the fabric, working down the length. Use a steam iron and a pressing cloth to press areas of the garment during construction where necessary.
We recommend spot- and dry-cleaning wool-rich garments, particularly if they’re lined. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
