‘Edge of reason’ purple & green floral brocade fabric

We’ll freely admit to being suckers for a dramatic brocade and this one’s just in from Italy, via a high-end UK-based design house. This purple and green floral brocade fabric makes a fabulous statement and we see absolutely no reason at all why you might want to save it for ‘best’. The power of colour – especially in the form of a favourite garment – is one that will lift your spirits as soon as you open your wardrobe door. Wear it, and you’re doing the same for everyone around you. As with most brocade fabrics, this one is relatively light weight, although deceptively sturdy. It’s a fabric with excellent opacity and the capacity to create volume in a statement jacket or sculptural skirt.

What kind of fabric is this?

Our purple and green floral brocade fabric is a polyester fabric which has been woven in a multidirectional twill weave on the outward-facing side. It’s closely-woven, hence its opacity – and there are no annoyingly-long threads in the weave pattern, meaning that it’s less vulnerable to catching than some more loosely-woven brocades.

What does this fabric feel like?

This is a fabric with a soft handle with the woven texture evident in the feel of the fabric. Although it can be pulled out of shape on the bias, it springs back to the straight grain, making it surprisingly easy to work with.

How does this fabric move?

This is is a gently-structured, malleable fabric which doesn’t hang or drape except under its own weight. It’s asking for pleats and tucks to help sculpt soft angles and shapes. Will I need to line this fabric?

This purple and green floral brocade fabric has excellent opacity for its weight. However we’d suggest a lining will help with the comfort of wearing this fabric as well as with structure, shape, and movement across other garments.

What can I make with this fabric?

Dresses and separates including skirts, dresses and jackets too, are all options for this exceptional fabric. Lightweight coats and coat-dresses are also worth consideration. The structure and texture of this fabric means that trousers probably aren’t appropriate.

We love the idea of a statement skirt and have been researching patterns that would make the most of such a unique fabric. The Tulip Skirt from The Assembly Line has an architectural shape that would allow this fabric to sing – with pockets, too!

If you line your garment, then spot- or dry-clean it as the lining may respond differently to being washed and the fit of your garment will be affected.
