Denim fabrics come in many shades and weights – and this blue denim fabric sits just towards the lighter-weight bracket although it has plenty of substance and resilience. It’ll be perfect for casual garments including jeans and jackets. It’s a stable fabric with no stretch and will be easy to work with.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a 100% cotton fabric in a distinctive twill weave. The dark navy blue colour is broken very slightly by the lighter-blue yarns in that twill pattern on the right side. At 225g (8oz) per square metre, this is very much at the lighter-weight end of the medium-weight denim bracket; it’s a classic weight for women’s jeans and trousers.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our blue denim fabric is smooth and crisp touch. It’s very stable, but is also quite pliable. It will be comfortable and breathable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This fabric has a crisp structure that means it will hold a shape. Since it’s not a heavy denim, it has some movement in its fall, creating angled folds in a pile . You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
The colour, weight and close weave of this fabric mean that it has excellent opacity for its weight. Trousers and jackets won’t require a lining; traditionally denim garments have finished seams on the inside and show the reverse of the fabric.
What can I make with this fabric?
This is a classic light-to-medium-weight denim fabric and as such it will work well for more stylised denim trousers as well as jeans and jackets. Seventies-style denim coats are also a useful cross-season garment which this denim would be perfect for. If jeans are your thing, then the ‘Morgan Jeans’ pattern from Closet Core recommends a non-stretch denim and the weight of this fabric would be perfect for this more relaxed cut of jeans.
Sustainability
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Cotton garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when chemicals and large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics.
