‘A ponte, Jim – but not as we know it’ – one way of describing this classic blue and white striped doubleknit jersey fabric. What in fact we do have here is a fabulous muted french navy and ivory striped doubleknit jersey fabric in a blend of cotton and elastane. It’s not only the composition that distinguishes it from a ponte Roma jersey fabric (which usually comprises polyester, viscose and elastane) but it doesn’t have the distinctive weave structure of a ponte Roma.
There is a definite right and wrong side to this striped doubleknit jersey fabric, with the right side showing a normal stocking-style knit pattern and the reverse having a knit structure that someone more expert than us will recognise – but which is clearly the ‘wrong’ side. Beautifully soft to handle with excellent opacity and a robust structure yet pliable and easy to work, this is a fabric with a soft, folding drape as you can see from this video.
The stretch capacity of this superb-quality jersey is limited to about 10% across the width of the fabric – plenty for comfort and ease but not the kind of jersey knit you’re going to drape, ruche or ripple. We’d suggest choosing a pattern design that anticipates sufficient fabric structure to hold the shape of a garment. One example would be the classic ‘Coco’ tunic by Tilly & the Buttons – we think our blue and white striped doubleknit jersey fabric has just the right amount of structure and stretch to hold the shape of this design.
