This black stretch cotton jersey fabric is an exception to the usual rule that cotton knits tend to be more structured and less draping that other types of jersey fabrics. This black stretch cotton jersey fabric has a definite drape; it’s a very gentle fabric which will work wonderfully as an elegant t-shirt, a tunic or the kind of long-sleeved top that will do sterling wardrobe service in a variety of settings, from lounging to classic daywear.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our stretch black cotton jersey fabric is a versatile medium-weight single-knit fabric. Its composition is 97% cotton with 3% elastane.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our black stretch cotton jersey fabric is kitted using relatively fine yarns and has a very soft handle. It is a breathable fabric and will be beautifully comfortable comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a draping jersey which hangs and swings with a bounce. The elastane content helps with that weight and movement. The stretch capacity is firm and resilient; it’s around 40% both up and down, and across the width of the fabric. You can see how it drapes and stretches in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a t-shirt, top or tunic; this jersey is substantial enough to cope in a single layer for most types of garment. However a skirt or dress would need a half-slip in order for it to move against the body, unless you’re wearing it over bare legs.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tops, tunics, casual dresses and lounge tops would all be options for this classic single-knit. You could use it for leggings but we’d say it would come in at the lighter-weight end of what you’d be looking for – fine under a tunic or sweater dress but probably not as a stand-alone garment. The relaxed styling of the ‘Isla’ Top from Tessuti is a perfect example of a design that we think would work very well for this fabric – relaxed and draping with an elegant line.
Sustainability
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. As with many deadstock fabrics we don’t have sustainability documentation for this fabric, but we do know it has come to us from a reputable manufacturer who works within the Better Cotton Initiative. This ensures that water and chemical usage are kept to a minimum and manufacturing works to defined sustainability and ethical standards.
