The plain white cotton shirt is a classic wardrobe staple that seems to have found its moment. It’s always been a bit of a favourite here at ClothSpot – easy to dress up as well as perfect for a more relaxed look. We’ve introduced this plain white cotton poplin shirting fabric as a more substantial alternative to our popular ‘Placket’ plain white Pima cotton lawn fabric.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our white cotton poplin shirting fabric is a medium-weight, closely-woven cotton fabric with the finely-ridged weave structure that you’d expect in a poplin. This gives it more structure and opacity than a cotton lawn and makes it very adaptable across seasons.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our plain white cotton poplin shirting fabric has a smooth, crisp handle. It’s very cool and smooth next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
Our plain white cotton poplin shirting fabric has lovely structure and falls into angled folds. It holds some shape, but will relax a little with washing and wearing. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A top or shirt will be perfectly lovely unlined, although the weight and light colour of this fabric mean that you might want to pay attention to the colour of your undergarments. You might choose to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress unless you’re planning to wear it for a less formal occasion since your silhouette will be visible if you’re standing in front of the sun.
What can I make with this fabric?
This is the perfect fabric for tops and blouses, to wear over denim, or to take up a notch when paired with one of our classic cotton drill or wool suiting fabrics.
It works particularly well as a shirt with more substance than the average -oversized shirts continue to be a classic wardrobe item and we’re particularly keen on the ‘Oversized Shirt’ from The Assembly Line, for which this white cotton poplin shirting fabric would be perfect.
As a plant-based fibre, cotton is a natural product that can be grown easily. Cotton garments tend to be strong and durable and can be recycled. However current production levels of cotton will be increasingly difficult to sustain, especially when chemicals and large amounts of water are used to process cotton fabrics. Maintain the sustainability of cotton garments by careful washing and repair.
