Floral cotton lawns are something of a summer staple and we wouldn’t be without them. We’re aware though that an overdose in our wardrobes can begin to look a little chintzy. We were gratified then, to spot this spiky indigo blue rose-printed cotton lawn fabric. ‘Well’ we thought. ‘Here’s something a bit more grown up’. Looking for all the world as if Edward Scissorhands had taken up flower arranging, we love the dynamism, the depth and the edginess of this print. For the record, the shade of green in the foliage is one of our most favourite – slightly greyed, rich and with a little blue in it – the perfect complement.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our indigo blue rose-printed cotton lawn fabric is a lighter-weight, closely-woven cotton lawn. It’s woven from long-fibred ‘Pima’ cotton; strong, fine cotton yarn which results in a smooth, refined and high-quality cloth.
What does this fabric feel like?
This fabric has a soft, smooth and cool handle. Although there’s a light texture, it’s very soft and not at all stiff.
How does this fabric move?
The movement of this indigo blue rose-printed cotton lawn fabric is a soft, floating waft which will catch a breeze with elegance, as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A top or shirt will be perfectly lovely unlined, although you might choose to line, layer or wear a half-slip under a skirt or dress unless you’re planning to wear it for a less formal occasion, since your silhouette will be visible if you’re standing in front of the sun. We don’t think that’s a problem in a summer frock, especially one that falls from generous gathers, but you might! Our ‘Placket’ plain white Pima cotton lawn fabric would be an option as a bodice lining or as a skirt lining if worn over bare legs.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think this fabric is perfect for summer tops and blouses – and, we think, gently-falling maxi dresses. We’d be inclined to make the most of its lighter weight with ruches and softly-rolling gathers, bringing body and movement to a garment without bulkiness. However we also think it would make a very cool summer shirt. You might try this version of the ‘Cielo’ Top by Closet Case – this lawn has the capacity to make the most of the lantern sleeves without being overly stiff.
