We have been steadily extending our colour range of these stretch suiting fabrics which have a similar composition to Roma jersey fabrics. However as with its sibling colourways, this dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric is a woven and not a knitted fabric. We’ve called them ‘suiting’ fabrics as a generic term – however in truth they’re fabulously versatile, lending themselves to separates, dresses and layering.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric is a blend of viscose and polyester, with just a little stretch. Closely woven with excellent opacity, we’d describe it either as a lighter-weight suiting fabric or sitting at the heavier end of a medium-weight dress fabric.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a very smooth, gentle handle. It’s comfortable next to the skin and since the weave is so close, doesn’t have an obvious texture.
How does this fabric move?
This is a very draping fabric however it’s not completely without body and has a little lively structure to it as well. It’s very pliable and easy to work. Our dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric has just a little stretch across its width to provide a small amount of ease in a fitted garment. You can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
This dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric has excellent opacity for its weight. You won’t need to line a dress or tunic made from this fabric for purposes of modesty, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body. Jackets and skirts will most likely require lining for structure and shape as well as movement across the body, especially over hosiery.
What can I make with this fabric?
Tunics and dresses and separates including skirts, trousers and jackets too, are all options for this dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric. We think it’s tremendously versatile and not especially complicated to work with.
We’ve sewn up a variety of garments in this adaptable fabric and we can confirm that it’s well-behaved, pliable, drapes beautifully and presses well. If you’re looking for an elegant yet comfortable pair of relaxed-cut trousers to form the basis of an outfit then this is the perfect fabric to consider. We’d suggest looking at Style Arc’s Leah Lounge Pants, a pattern we’ve used with great success, and perfectly suited to this fabric we think.
