Although we’re implying that this dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric might be best used as matching jackets, skirts and trousers, we think it’s far more versatile than that. A light-to-medium-weight so-called suiting fabric, we think it would also be perfect as softly-fitting or flowing trousers, a suit, a tunic or an elegantly form-fitting (yet forgiving) dress. The shade of navy blue that we have here is a good, solid, dark navy blue. It’s a definite navy blue – classically so – and not a colour you’d mistake for a black.
We’ve tried hard to balance the shade accurately – however different screens will display subtly different shades – so please do ask us for a free sample of this fabric if you’re in any doubt.
We have been quietly extending our colour range of these stretch suiting fabrics, the composition of which is is 76% polyester, 21% viscose and 4% spandex. If that looks like a familiar composition then you’re right – it’s the same as most decent quality ponte Roma jersey fabrics. However as with its sibling colourways, this dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric is a woven and not a knitted fabric. We can tell you that the spandex is in the weft of the fabric, helping with fit across the width of the fabric. There’s not a vast amount of stretch – it amounts to a comfortable ease, rather than the stretch in a ponte Roma jersey for instance. It returns to its usual shape with good ‘spring back’.
This dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric has a solid but very soft, draping and flexible handle with good opacity for its weight. You could use it for a fitted or semi-fitted dress – for which it wouldn’t have to be lined, depending on the style. However for for robustness and fit we think the bodice could easily be self-lined – and a satin lining or half-slip would enable movement of this fabric against the body.
Although it’s an uncommon fabric, we think our dark navy blue stretch suiting fabric is tremendously versatile and not especially complicated to work with. We’ve sewn up a variety of garments in this adaptable fabric and we can confirm that it’s well-behaved, pliable, drapes beautifully and presses well. Our latest garment was a pair of relaxed trousers in the ivory colourway of this stretch suiting fabric using Vogue Pattern 9067 – look out for the results in our upcoming blog post.
