Brocade always sounds like such a grand name for a fabric – calling to mind the livery of the footmen in Cinderella, for instance. However it’s a fabric that can be surprisingly versatile and we think that’s definitely the case with this statement geometric bronze, pink and rust brocade fabric.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our pink and rust brocade fabric is primarily a polyester fabric but has a substantial cotton element as well as viscose and a tiny bit of stretch. Closely woven with excellent opacity, we’d describe it either as a lighter-weight suiting fabric or sitting towards the heavier end of a medium-weight dress fabric. Having said that it’s not a heavy fabric in terms of pure weight – in fact it’s surprisingly wafting for a fabric of such substance.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a soft, slightly crisp handle. Its woven and metallic-enhanced texture is evident in the feel of the fabric but in a very stable weave. Although it has some texture, there are no areas of vulnerable delicacy. The wrong side of the fabric has a softer, more cotton-like feel to it.
How does this fabric move?
This isn’t a draping fabric; rather it holds a shape. Pleats and tucks will help sculpt interesting angles and shapes. However it does fall and swing with elegance, it’s very pliable and easy to work. Our bronze and rust brocade fabric has just a tiny amount of stretch across its width – no more than 1-2%; just enough to provide a small amount of ease in a fitted garment. You can see how it moves in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Our grey, pink and rust brocade fabric has excellent opacity for its weight. However we’d suggest a lining will help with the comfort of wearing this fabric as well as with structure and shape. Although this isn’t a ‘scratchy’ brocade, as a skirt it will need help moving across hosiery; also a lined bodice will be more comfortable against the skin.
What can I make with this fabric?
Dresses and separates including skirts, dresses and jackets too, are all options for this exceptional fabric. Lightweight coats and coat-dresses are also worth consideration. The weight and texture of this fabric means that trousers probably aren’t appropriate. We love the volume in the ‘Candice’ Skirt by Style Arc – perfect for the shape-holding capacity of this fabric – and it has pockets too!
68% polyester, 24% cotton, 7% viscose, 1% elastane
We recommend hand-washing this fabric in order to preserve its texture and structure. Find out more on our About our fabric pages.
