Our black and white cotton gingham fabric is a classic. Gingham has been a feature of summer wardrobes for a summer or two now and shows no sign of abating. It’s also a great fabric if you’re partial to a little vintage styling.
This is a smoothly-finished black and white cotton gingham fabric that’s soft to handle yet which has a little crispness and life; enough indeed to hold a shape. It falls and wafts with gentle elegance, as you can see from this video.
We’d describe our black and white cotton gingham fabric as having a similar handle and weight to a good-quality cotton lawn. It’s a fabric that would work beautifully as a summer top, shirt or tunic, crying out to be popped over a pair of stylish black capri pants and either left loose or tied at the front in a knot. If you’ve a favourite lipstick to hand then so much the better!
The shade of black here is a good solid one and the white is fresh and crisp without leaning into eye-watering blue-white territory. As a top or tunic then it will work just fine as in its own right; there need be no concerns regarding modesty. As a dress, we’d suggest a slip or a simple cotton lawn lining might be necessary to add some weight and opacity, depending on your pattern style.
We’ve returned repeatedly to Vogue Pattern 8772 for shirt-making. It has a variety of sleeve designs and can also be adapted for a longer-line tunic.
Any of these combinations would be perfect for our black and white cotton gingham fabric which we’re sure will prove well-behaved and a bit of a charm to work with.
Wash at 30 or 40 degrees – see our Fabric care pages for more information.
