We’re great aficionados of stretch cotton sateen and we’re suckers for a geometric print, too. It’s supremely versatile, easy to work and practical too – yet the subtle sheen on the surface of the fabric lifts it out of the workaday and into a slightly more upmarket bracket. The colours in this wine and teal stretch cotton sateen fabric work wonderfully on their own as part of a considered palette, but should find plenty of matches or complements elsewhere in your wardrobe if you decide to use this fabric for separates.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is a cotton sateen with a small amount of stretch across the width – we’d say around the 5% mark. It has a plain-woven reverse side but the face of the fabric has a satin weave which reflects a little light, giving it a distinctive lustre. This is a light-to-medium weight sateen; perfect for cross-seasonal wear.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our wine and teal stretch cotton sateen fabric has a smooth, crisp handle. Although it’s not a soft or ‘floppy’ fabric it will be cool and comfortable next to the skin as a dress or a pair of trousers. It’s not at all bulky; it’s very pliable and easy to work.
How does this fabric move?
This is a fabric with the ability to hold some shape. It doesn’t drape or flow; it falls into angled folds. The 5% widthwise stretch element is just enough for a little ease in a semi-fitted garment as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
As you’d expect in a sateen, our wine and teal stretch cotton sateen fabric has very good opacity. You wouldn’t need to line a skirt or trousers for purposes of modesty, comfort or structure. If you were making a dress, skirt or jacket then you might want to add a lining for ease of movement over hosiery or other clothes.
What can I make with this fabric?
This wine and teal stretch cotton sateen fabric will work for most separates as well as dresses that require a little structure. Pencil or shorter skirts, wide-legged crop trousers and casual jackets are all options. We think the scale of the pattern makes it the perfect candidate for the classic ‘French Dart’ pattern from Maven Patterns.
