With this one we’re firmly into Winter Coat territory and we don’t mind admitting it! This grey and mauve wool mix coating fabric is a fabulous check design; we particularly like the pimento windowpane line echoing the otherwise muted checked design. It adds some definition and verve to an otherwise beautifully muted, heathery palette. This fabric has the thickness of a decent-weight melton, but with slightly less weight due to its weave structure which despite its substance, has more structure rather than the dense felting of a melton.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our grey and mauve wool mix coating fabric is 74% wool with 18% viscose and just 8% polyester. The yarns are relatively thick and quite textured; closely-woven in a plain weave pattern. This is a fabric will near-total opacity which we’d describe as a medium-to-heavier weight coating fabric in terms of substance.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a fabric with a particularly soft handle. Although the two sides of this cloth are almost indistinguishable in appearance, one side (and we’re taking that as the outer) is slightly napped, lending it even more softness and air-trapping warmth. It will be very smooth and comfortable if worn next to the skin as a coat collar for instance.
How does this fabric move?
This is a well-structured fabric, moving with elegance and falling into softly-structured and angled folds. It’s pliable and stable to work with. You can see how it moves and drapes in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You don’t have to line this fabric – both sides are well-finished and simple wrap coat wouldn’t have to be lined (although your seams and edges would need to be bound or stitched). However a lining would help with warmth and movement against layers worn underneath. It looks particularly lovely with our Tungsten grey viscose twill lining fabric – among others in our lining collection.
What can I make with this fabric?
There’s a classic midcentury look about this grey and mauve wool mix coating fabric that would lend itself to simple and stylish cross-season outerwear. Elegant wraps, duster coats and trench coats are all options – and we’re particular fans of the Oslo Coat from Tessuti Patterns. We can imagine that generous shawl collar in this deliciously-soft coating…
Sustainability
Wool is a natural fibre, which uses much less water and fewer chemicals to process than many other fabrics. It is long-lasting and can be repaired, all of which make it a more sustainable choice.
