To call this elegant grey wool check fabric ‘elegant’ is something of an understatement. This refined 100% British wool cloth might be reserved in its colour and style but it could never be unremarkable.
Fresh in from UK manufacturers Abraham Moon, our grey wool check fabric sports a windowpane check. That’s the official term for this simple, finely-woven, open check (4.5cm square if you were wondering).
This wool suiting sits somewhere between a melton and a wool twill. The distinctive diagonal weave is still visible – yet the construction and manufacture is such that this isn’t a fabric likely to fray. It cuts like butter – and has a slight – but soft and inviting nap on the right side. We’d describe this it as leaning towards the lighter-weight end of the medium-weight wool suiting bracket. It’s pliable and isn’t at all bulky, having a lovely warm handle, and an exquisite, restrained drape as you can see from this video.
We think our grey wool check fabric will be perfect for a whole wardrobe full of garments – although we appreciate you might want to pick just one (or maybe two?). Tailored winter dresses, tunics and skirts will be garments you’ll find yourself turning to repeatedly. Jackets and lighter-weight coats will also be options – whether you choose to fit them or opt for more draping or cocoon styles. An outfit in our grey wool flannel fabric doesn’t have to be sober – use it as a classic backdrop for a pop of colour. We’ve teamed it here with our ‘Chalon’ soft ochre ribbed jersey fabric. We absolutely love grey and yellow colour combinations and this one has a distinctive 20s/30s air to it we think.
For our money a simple A-line or pencil skirt would be a straight-forward yet stylish and timeless way of updating your winter wardrobe with this grey wool check fabric.
This fitted wrap skirt from Vogue Patterns would be a contemporary option – the asymmetric wrap effect would emphasise the design of this grey wool check fabric.
We recommend spot- and dry-cleaning wool garments, particularly if they’re lined. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
