We haven’t described this houndstooth checked wool suiting fabric as a ‘classic’ for nothing. We can assure you that not only does it look as British as a cup of tea with a ginger nut in the saucer, but it has indeed been produced in the UK and comes to us from a high-end UK-based designer.
With a fine, closely-woven twill weave, this houndstooth checked wool suiting fabric has a refined houndstooth check woven in black and warm buff yarns with an overlaid windowpane check formed by a sharp olive brown line on the weft and a dark red line on the lengthwise warp. It’s a lighter-weight suiting fabric with excellent opacity for its weight and a beautiful drape as you can see from this video.
Our houndstooth checked wool suiting fabric has a smooth, refined handle. As Alice can confirm (since she’s already snaffled some for a pair of relaxed ‘Leah’ Lounge Pants) it’s a dream to work with, as you’d expect from a 100% wool fabric of this quality. There’s absolutely no ease across the width of length of the weave so you’ll need to make sure your pattern sizing builds that in. However there’s a mechanical ease across the bias which does help with ease of movement.
It’s smooth against the skin if you’re wearing it as unlined trousers; it would also be fabulous as a skirt, a jacket, or even a tailored dress or pinafore. Alice also reports that it stood up with comfort and elegance to a day of train journeys, meetings and general running around. As a lighter-weight suiting you’ll need to consider ways of introducing some structure if you’re planning a more tailored garment.
There’ll be a blog post on Alice’s trousers at some point, meanwhile here’s a link to that Leah Lounge Pants pattern.
We recommend dry-cleaning this fabric to preserve its fit, finish and texture, particularly for lined garments. See our Fabric care pages for more information.
