There’s a vintage note to this pastel and red floral linen mix fabric; a smidgeon of 1930s design perhaps, in the way that the floral design is sketched out. Also, we’re suckers for the rebellious combination of pink and red here, as well as the way in which the off-white background to this print reveals the subtle weave pattern of this linen mix.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our pastel and red floral linen mix fabric is a blend of cotton and linen. The cotton content means that there’s a little more structure and weight to this fabric than you might find in a pure linen. It makes it a very easy fabric to work with. We’d describe it as a medium-weight dress fabric.
Don’t forget that there’s no ease in linen fabrics so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your linen to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a crisp fabric and very smooth to the touch despite the classic linen texture in the weave. It’s breathable and will be beautifully comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This pink and red floral linen mix fabric drapes and moves in a lively fashion, just as you’d expect from a linen fabric. It’s not a fluid fabric – it tends to bounce and fold rather than fall into folds. You can see how it moves in this video.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body. A loose dress will reveal some silhouette when backed by sunlight, but no more than is in keeping with the style of garment you’re likely to be considering. If you need a bodice or skirt lining then our ‘Placket’ plain white pima cotton lawn fabric would be perfect. It’s cool, not too heavy and soft next to the skin, although as a cotton, best over bare legs rather than hosiery.
What can I make with this fabric?
Dresses and shirts, even loosely-fitted shorts and trousers would all be perfect for this pink and red linen mix fabric. However we also think that the structure of this fabric might just make it an unexpected choice for a summer jacket such as this ‘Harriet’ Jacket from Style Arc. It would be rather lovely over jeans or a more formal fabric such as our ‘Carter’ draping red triple crepe fabric.
