We’re always keen to keep good-quality denim in stock and this dark blue denim fabric is a classic. It comes to us from a high-end designer label and at 13oz, is a good jeans weight. Jeans are usually made from a mid-weight denim of around 12oz to 16 oz so this dark blue denim fabric falls firmly within that bracket. It’s a very dark blue – but very definitely a blue denim. Like the fabric itself, the colour will obviously soften with wear, so although it’s always going to be a darker denim, the blueness will become more apparent over time.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our dark blue denim fabric has a classic denim weave; closely-woven with just a little texture. Obviously it has excellent opacity. The weft thread in this cloth (the one running across the width of the fabric) is white, meaning that the diagonal twill weave of this denim is picked out. It’s a distinctive and deliberate design feature which gives the fabric a lift.
What does this fabric feel like?
Although this a robust fabric, it’s not at all rough to the touch and will be comfortable next to the skin, especially once it softens with wear. It’s a very pliable fabric which we think will behave itself when you work with it, although we recommend you use a ‘Denim’ or ‘Jeans’ needle to ensure that your machine can cope with the layers of fabric, particularly if making jeans.
How does this fabric move?
Despite its pliability, this is obviously not a draping fabric. It has excellent structure, holding a shape and falling into cornered folds as you can see from this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
A pair of trousers or casual jacket in this fabric won’t need lining. Also this is a fabric with excellent opacity so won’t require a lining for purposes of modesty. However a dress, skirt or more formal jacket could be lined in order to add design interest; also to enable ease of movement when being worn or when you’re taking it on and off.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our classic dark blue denim fabric is perfect for casual skirts and jean-style jackets but most particularly for trousers and of course, jeans. A popular jeans design is Closet Case’s Morgan Jean pattern which is designed for non-stretch denim. Closet Case have lots of jeans-making guidance too – making it a great place to start if you’re new to jeans sewing!
Machine wash at 30 or 40 degrees either separately or with other dark fabrics. Find out more on our About our fabric pages
