Always on the lookout for alternatives to florals, we couldn’t resist the 1980s-industrial print pattern on this black, grey, scarlet and burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric. 80s fabric prints are making something of a comeback in AW19 collections and we thought this fabric would be an opportunity to be well ahead of the curve. But aside from all that – we just liked it – and it works wonderfully with the other burgundy, grey and black fabrics in our collection.
One of the (many) fabulous things about single-knit jersey fabrics is that you can layer them up for warmth in cooler weather or waft around breezily in them on warmer days. This dynamic grey and burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric is the perfect candidate for a cross-season wardrobe.
The knit here is a relatively fine one – and as you can see from our image our burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric is one happy to be gathered and ruched without adding excessive bulk. Despite this, it’s not a fabric without substance once you’re holding a metre or two. Our grey and burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric has good opacity for its weight and although a dress might need a half-slip or a lining for modesty and free movement against the body, a top or tunic would work well in its own right with no concern for decency. Having said that, a dress for less formal summer wear or over bare legs would be quite happy without any such help.
As you’d expect, our scarlet and burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric moves and drapes beautifully as you can see in our video.
It has some mechanical stretch down its length and about 30% spandex-assisted stretch-and-return across its width.
Tops, tunics and dresses will all be options – and we’d be tempted to play with the ability of this fabric to stretch, ruche, drape and move. However given the nature of this print you could also opt for a simple design that provided for maximum impact of the colour and pattern. We think our 1980s burgundy printed viscose jersey fabric would be wonderful in a design such as the classic ‘Olivia’ Wrap Dress from Named Clothing.
