Just because we’re currently heading into winter doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in a few lighter-weight fabrics. We think this rust and green viscose challis fabric is a wintry delight – it’s a fluid fabric that ripples rather than wafts; falls rather than catches the air. It won’t hold the gentle shape that a cotton lawn will – but it gathers and drapes with beautiful elegance. Blouses and tops are obviously going to be divine – but if you want a voluminous dress that comes to life then this might also be the one for you.
What kind of fabric is this?
This is is a lighter-to-medium weight viscose fabric, woven in a plain weave pattern.
What does this fabric feel like?
Our delicately-printed rust and green viscose challis fabric has a particularly soft, smooth handle. It will be cool and very comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This is a very draping fabric with a very smooth handle. It doesn’t have any shape-holding structure, however as you can see from the video, it swings with gentle energy and falls decisively too.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
Although plain, the weave is quite close and the dense, darker print pattern both mean there’s very good opacity for the weight of this fabric. You’ll be fine with an unlined blouse or tunic. However a silhouette may be visible against the sun and so depending the design of a dress or skirt, a plain cotton lawn lining or a half-slip may be necessary for modesty as well as for additional substance and shape. However voluminous and gathered designs will definitely reduce the need to worry about this depending on how relaxed you are about such things.
What can I make with this fabric?
We think our draping floral green viscose challis fabric will be perfect for elegant tops and blouses as well as more casual dresses and tunics. The soft gathers and volume in a relaxed top like the ‘Roscoe’ from True / Bias would make lovely use of the gentle movement and delicate print design of this fabric.
