This rich rust red Tencel-linen fabric is one of a range of cool, smooth handled Tencel fabrics blended with a little linen to provide additional texture and liveliness. We love them for their versatility and laid-back sophistication as well as their sustainability credentials. Whether you’re considering a shirt dress, some summer trousers or a cross-season tunic, this is a fabric that we think you’ll love. The shade of red here is a deep oxide red; leaning towards rust but stopping short of a brick red. It looks wonderful with muted greens and khaki, ochres, oranges and crisp neutrals.
What kind of fabric is this?
Our rust red Tencel-linen fabric is 70% Tencel with 30% linen yarns. It’s a light-to-medium weight dress fabric (180 gsm) with a close weave with a fine but very evident linen-type slubbiness. Tencel fabrics are manufactured from plant-based cellulose using a closed-loop production method in which water is recycled and there are minimum waste products. They’re breathable and resist fading.
There’s no ease in this fabric so you’ll need to factor that into your garment choice and sizing. You’ll also need to pre-wash your fabric to ensure that any initial shrinkage is removed prior to cutting.
What does this fabric feel like?
This is a smooth, bouncing fabric; cool to the touch with some texture in its weave but supremely comfortable next to the skin.
How does this fabric move?
This rust red Tencel-linen fabric is a lively cloth which falls and swings beautifully, but which will hold a shape with character. You can see how it moves in this video.
NOTE: Our videos are intended to show the movement of a fabric. For accurate colour and pattern detail, please refer to our still images.
Will I need to line this fabric?
You won’t need to line a shirt, top or tunic made from this fabric, however a dress may require a bodice lining for structure depending on your pattern design. Unless you’re wearing it over bare legs, then you’ll need a half-slip to enable this fabric to move against your body. A loose dress will reveal some silhouette when backed by sunlight, but no more than is in keeping with the style of garment you’re likely to be considering.
What can I make with this fabric?
Our rust red Tencel-linen fabric is a versatile fabric which we think will lend itself to shirts, tunics and dresses. Loosely-fitted trousers will also be an option, as will warmer-weather jumpsuits. We’ve been looking at shirt-dresses as an option for this rippling, lively fabric; a current favourite is McCalls 8030 which we love for its unfussy, relaxed cut, with or without a belt.
