We love a little fabric surprise almost as much as we love a decent doubleknit. This black cotton ponte Roma jersey fabric offers both – it’s a well-structured ponte Roma which we think will prove highly versatile.
The surprise it has to offer is its composition – this is a cotton doubleknit with simply the addition of spandex for stretch-and-return purposes. It has very good opacity for its weight and 20% stretch across its width. It also has some ease down its length but we think that’s more mechanical than spandex-enabled.
As implied above, this isn’t a draping or fluid fabric; our black cotton ponte Roma jersey fabric has more structure than the average ponte Roma; you can see how it moves and stretches in this video.
It’s this structure that led us to describe it as a more ‘formal’ ponte Roma jersey. We think it would excel as a fitted or semi-fitted dress, top or skirt. It would also work well as a semi-fitted or closely-fitted trousers. However the ‘formal’ suggestion came about as we considered it for a jacket. We think our black cotton ponte Roma jersey fabric will hold a shape well and will prove comfortable to wear without appearing too casual; the kind of garment which will earn its keep during the day as well as in the evening.
With this in mind, you might want to consider it as a candidate for Grainline Studio’s ‘Morris’ blazer. We think it has the presence and shape-holding capacity that pattern design demands.
