As the weather turns and the days grow shorter, a warm check fabric is surely just the thing to ring the change in your wardrobe. We think that wrapping yourself in this soft navy blue wool plaid fabric would lift even the most summer-lorn heart. The cobalt, purple, vibrant red and ochre colours of this check pattern are uplifting in their own right; just imagine them brought to life if worn with a garment in one of those colours.
We’d describe our navy blue wool plaid fabric as leaning towards a heavier-weight suiting – or a medium-weight coating fabric. It’s constructed using a twill weave; slightly napped on the surface. It’s very pliable; not at all bulky, with a welcoming, soft handle. It has an elegant drape as you can see from this video.
We think this is a fabulous winter wool for jackets, coats, wraps and even warm pinafore dresses and skirts (although you’d want to line, or wear a slip with, the latter). Although it’s not the heaviest of our coating fabrics by any means, with a good lining (you surely won’t resist it with our Depths of luxury navy blue crepe-backed satin fabric) we think it will keep away the chill with style.
We rather like the idea of it with a simple shape like this Cocoon coat from BurdaStyle – we’re particularly fond of those in-seam pockets at the front.
Finally, we thought you might be interested to know that the purple stripe in the check of this navy blue wool plaid fabric is precisely the colour of our ‘Thurloe’ wool & cashmere purple melton fabric. Almost as if we planned it… Can you imagine, a skirt in the melton, topped with a belted jacket in this plaid?

We recommend spot-and dry-cleaning wool garments, particularly if they’re lined. Find out more on our About our fabric pages.
